HTML-wise, and therefore browser-wise, a layout grid is actually just a normal table that GoLive builds on the fly as you place elements upon it and move them around. To build this table on the fly, GoLive simply adds a parameter it calls cool inside the opening table tag. In GoLive the cool parameter is used and recognized, giving you the benefit of a layout grid, but when a browser sees the cool parameter it simply ignores it. No harm is done; no extra work takes place.

In the following set of instructions, I walk you through the leveling procedures for a mixer: Plug your microphone into the mixer and hook up a pair of headsets to the mixers headphone jack. Please read each of these steps before performing them, as some of you will want different settings. You are going to level each of the channels that you have audio components plugged into. These leveling rules apply to speaking into a microphone and an external audio device to the system. The key to leveling is isolating every channel from every other channel while performing the procedure, so that when they are used together, they all have the same output level.

The Preference Center The page the respondents arrived at by clicking through the initial e-mail was called the Preference Center (see Exhibit 12.2). Throughout the test period this was available for individuals to change their communication preferences at any time (every e-mail that was sent had a link to the preference page). On this page an individual could let Greenpeace know which of the organization s six key campaign areas most interested them (A): genetic engineering; ancient forests; oceans; climate change; nuclear threats, or toxic chemicals. They could also select the type and frequency of e-mail communication they wanted, (B). The majority of people who signed up wanted more e-mail communication; 80 percent wanted action alerts (which would be sent whenever an important action occurred); 78 percent wanted the monthly e-newsletter; and only 8 percent selected the quarterly newsletter. In the left-hand menu of the Preference Center, individuals were able to manage their account with Greenpeace by changing preferences they had previously set up, (C), by changing their password; letting the organization know about e-mail address changes (this is important with acquired online supporters as one does not often have a full postal address); and finally, by using the unsubscribe facility (widely considered best practice for e-mail communications). Also provided was a Contact us section, (D), where supporters could access various other ways of communicating with the organization. These included: A Call Me button, where someone could choose a time for Greenpeace to call them to answer questions. This was available during Amsterdam office hours, so a time zone converter was supplied to enable supporters to select an appropriate time to be called.

Perhaps the most important mechanism of chromatic adaptation is independent sensitivity changes in the photoreceptors, sometimes referred to as receptor gain control. It is possible imagine a gain control that varies the relationship between the number of photons incident on a photoreceptor and the electrochemical signal it produces in response to those photons. Chromatic adaptation would be served by turning down the gain when there are many photons (high levels of excitation for the particular cone type) and turning up the gain when photons are less readily available. The key to chromatic adaptation is that these gain controls are independent in each of the three cone types. (Gain control is certainly a mechanism of light adaptation as well, but light adaptation could be served by a single gain control for all three cone types. It is overly well served by independent mechanisms of chromatic adaptation.) Physiologically, changes in photoreceptor gain can be explained by pigment depletion at higher luminance levels. Light breaks down molecules of visual pigment (part of the process of phototransduction) and thus decreases the number of molecules available to produce further visual response. Therefore, at higher stimulus intensities there is less photopigment available and the photoreceptors exhibit a decreased responsivity. While pigment depletion provides a nice explanation, there is evidence that the visual system adapts in a similar way at luminance levels for which there is insigni cant pigment depletion. This adaptation is thought to be caused by gain-control mechanisms at the level of the horizontal, bipolar, and ganglion cells in the retina. Gain control in retinal cells beyond the photoreceptors helps to explain some of the spatially low-pass characteristics of chromatic adaptation. Delahunt and Brainard (2000) also discuss the interaction of various cone types in the control of chromatic adapatation.
